♦ Day 13 – Developing Story

Three Women. Three Reckonings. One Lesson.

Before this story reaches its conclusion tomorrow, this publication wants to sit briefly with each of the three wives at the centre of what Baba Segi engineered. Not to judge them. The facts will do that without any assistance from this reporter. But because each woman’s reckoning has its own particular shape, and that shape matters.

Iya Segi.

She built an empire inside someone else’s house and ran it with more competence than most people run their own. For years, she was untouchable, the first wife, the authority, the woman everyone deferred to. She controlled the narrative of this compound so completely that even when it started falling apart, she controlled the narrative of that too.

Until the phone. Until the message. Until the moment she went still at the window, and this reporter watched eleven days of careful management drain out of her face in real time.

What Iya Segi is reckoning with is not just the exposure of a secret. It is the discovery that the control she built her entire identity around was always, ultimately, borrowed. It belonged to Baba Segi. He simply let her hold it. And then he took it back.

Iya Tope.

She endured. That was her strategy and it was not a bad one. Keep your head down, make yourself useful, survive. For years it worked. The compound was difficult and the hierarchy was unkind but there was a roof and there was provision and there was a man who, whatever his failings, showed up.

Now the roof still stands but the foundation has cracked and Iya Tope, who built everything on endurance rather than agency, has discovered that endurance without power is just waiting.

She sat on the floor for a long time yesterday. This reporter suspects she is beginning to understand why.

Iya Femi.

She was always the loudest. The most combustible. The one most likely to say the thing nobody else would say. For eleven days she asked the right questions, who knew, who isn’t surprised, who in this house is lying, and she asked them with the full force of someone who has never learned to be quiet.

What Iya Femi is reckoning with is more complicated than the others, because Iya Femi’s fury has always been a shield. It kept her from being overlooked. It kept her relevant in a compound where relevance had to be fought for daily. But fury, it turns out, is not the same as power. And now that the man who gave her something to push against is gone, Iya Femi has discovered that she does not know how to be still. She is learning. The hard way. The only way she knows.

Tomorrow, this publication will file its final update. Baba Segi has a message for the women on the family compound. He has asked this reporter to deliver it through the only language he has ever fully trusted.

Come back tomorrow.

This is the final investigative dispatch. The CEN Report thanks its readers for following this story from the beginning.
