A message on a phone, to be precise, was seen by Iya Segi, who was not the intended recipient, on a table in the common area of the compound. The contents of that message have not been fully disclosed to this publication. What has been disclosed, by a source who was standing close enough to see Iya Segi’s face in the moment she read it, is this.

She went completely still. Not the controlled stillness this reporter has observed across ten days of careful management. Something different. Something that looked, for the first time, like a woman who had lost the thread entirely. She put the phone down. She walked to the window. She stood there for a very long time.

What followed is difficult to reconstruct with precision because it happened quickly and loudly and all at once. What this reporter can confirm is that by nine forty-five all four wives were in the same room for the first time since this investigation began. That Iya Femi was crying, not with grief, with fury, which is a different thing entirely. That Iya Tope sat down on the floor and did not get up for some time. That Iya Segi said nothing for the duration of what followed. And that Bolanle stood in the doorway, not quite inside the room, not quite outside it, and watched. She did not look surprised.
